The Power of Choosing a New Legacy
Share
One of the most powerful gifts God gives us is the ability to choose.
We may not have chosen the family we were born into or the pain we experienced, but we can choose what we pass on. We can choose a different legacy.
I used to believe I was stuck—that my story had already been written for me and the ending would look just like the pages of my family’s past. But God… He showed me that just because brokenness ran through my family history didn’t mean it had to run through my future.
What Legacy Really Means
A legacy isn’t just what you leave behind when you’re gone—it’s the life you’re building right now.
It’s the words you speak, the boundaries you set, the prayers you pray, the forgiveness you offer. It’s your choice to break cycles of anger, dysfunction, or silence and replace them with love, wholeness, and purpose.
Legacy is built one choice at a time.
The Biblical Foundation of New Beginnings
When we look at Scripture, we see that God specializes in new beginnings. Over and over, He took broken people from broken families and used them to start something new.
-
Joseph — betrayed, abandoned, yet used by God to save generations.
-
Ruth — widowed, displaced, yet grafted into the lineage of Jesus.
-
Paul — once a persecutor, later a preacher of the Gospel.
No matter how your story started, you get to choose how it continues.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
My Commitment to a New Legacy
I made a decision: I would not allow the dysfunction of my upbringing to define the future of my life—or the lives of those connected to me.
It wasn’t easy. It meant setting hard boundaries, doing inner work, and seeking healing through prayer, counseling, and God’s Word. But each step was worth it. And today, by the grace of God, the legacy I’m leaving looks very different than the one I inherited.
It’s Time to Reflect
-
What legacy are you building today?
-
What is one small choice you can make that future generations will thank you for?
