Why Healing Your Family Story Begins With You
Share
If you’ve ever thought, “If only my family would change, then I could finally move on,” I understand. I’ve been there too — waiting, hoping, praying that the ones who hurt me would be the ones to make it right.
But here’s the freeing truth: healing doesn’t start with them — it starts with you.
Healing Isn’t About Waiting for Others to Change
It’s a hard truth to accept, but also incredibly freeing: we don’t have to wait for anyone else to apologize, change, or acknowledge their wrongs before we begin to heal.
If we keep waiting for the apology that may never come or the relationship that may never look the way we hoped, we will stay stuck in cycles of pain and disappointment.
God calls each of us personally to healing — because healing is between us and Him, not us and them.
📖 “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3
Notice — it doesn’t say He needs the people who wounded you to fix it first. He meets you right where you are.
Your Healing Creates Generational Shifts
One of the most beautiful truths I've learned is this: when you heal, you don't just heal yourself — you heal generations after you.
Your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews — even friends — are watching you. Your choice to break cycles of anger, bitterness, silence, or fear ripples outward into their lives too.
📖 “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” — Deuteronomy 30:19
Choosing life sometimes looks like choosing healing — even when it’s hard.
Biblical Truth: God Starts With Individuals
Throughout Scripture, when God wanted to shift a family, a nation, or a generation, He didn’t always start by fixing everyone at once.
He started with one willing heart.
-
He started with Abraham when He wanted to birth a new people.
-
He started with Joseph when He wanted to save a generation from famine.
-
He started with Mary when He chose to bring the Savior into the world.
And today, He can start with you.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to say, "Lord, heal me. Teach me to walk with You."
It’s Time to Reflect
Where have you been waiting for someone else to change before you allowed yourself to heal?
What would it look like for you to give God permission to begin healing you right where you are?
