You Don’t Have to Be the One Who Holds It All Together

Have you ever felt like you were the glue holding everyone in your family together? The fixer. The peacemaker. The dependable one—even when your own heart was breaking?

For years, I lived in that role. I thought it was noble. I thought it was love. But behind the strength was exhaustion. And behind the smile was the silent question: When is it my turn to fall apart and be caught?

The Burden of Being the Strong One

In many families, there’s one person who becomes the emotional anchor for everyone else. They hold secrets, carry unspoken expectations, and often bury their own needs for the sake of peace.

If this sounds like you, I want you to hear this: God never asked you to carry everyone else’s healing on your back.

Even Jesus—full of compassion and strength—took time to step away, to pray, and to rest. Being strong doesn’t mean pretending you’re not hurting.

God’s Invitation to Rest

Matthew 11:28 says:

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Rest is not a reward for getting everything right—it’s a gift freely given. Letting go doesn’t mean you’ve failed your family. It means you’re finally trusting God to do what only He can do.

You don’t have to be the healer. You don’t have to be the glue. You just have to be willing to surrender.

Learning to Say “No” Without Guilt

Boundaries are an act of love—not just for others, but for yourself. When you create space between your heart and chaos, you make room for God’s peace to settle in.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I carrying what God never intended for me to carry?

  • What would it feel like to let Him lead instead of trying to hold it all together?

It’s Time to Breathe Again

You are not alone. You don’t have to carry this burden by yourself. The One who holds the universe is more than able to hold your family and hold you.

It’s Time to Reflect

What’s one area of your life where you’ve been “the strong one” at the cost of your own peace?
What would it look like to lay that burden at the feet of Jesus today?
